Healing Yourself With Soundwave Therapy
The vibrations of sound can help us to heal in many surprising and amazing ways.
Soundwave therapy is a way of using sound and the vibrations of sound upon our bodies as a way to calm the body and wind down the mind. It has many of the benefits of meditation. In fact, certain forms of sound therapy can actually induce near-instant meditative states.
Have you tried meditation, but it didn’t seem to work? Like anything, it takes practice and is reportedly not so easy to do. What if you could kick back on the couch while listening to some healing audio frequencies and reach the same levels of consciousness achieved by master meditators?
Anything that calms our minds and nervous systems is considered to have healing benefits. That is what sound healing does. So does knitting, fishing, model building, painting, breathing exercises, and anything else that allows us to forget about all our worries for a bit of precious time.
Mesmerization, Trance, and Sound Healing
Our brain waves change depending on what we are doing or how we are feeling; they can also be altered by listening to music. Music carries energy and emotion, delivering them to the listener. Alternatively, sound therapy is an instantaneous and effortless way to relax the mindbody, allowing us to release emotions.
Humans have utilized rhythms, chanting, and other musical forms of healing meditation for ages, but it wasn’t until about 1959 that it was discovered that audio could be used to change our brain’s frequency. Entrainment occurs when our brainwave frequencies synchronize with an external stimulus.
In other words, our brains can be made to fall into a rhythm with sound, just like what happens with our bodies when the beat makes us feel like dancing. When done correctly, audio brainwave entrainment has many healing benefits.
Sound Healing Encourages a Calm Mind
Today, we can use our technology to encourage our brain to shift gears into any state we desire. Entrainment is perfectly safe and has been used therapeutically for decades. We can target specific frequencies and routinely achieve remarkably particular results. A review of studies done suggests that brainwave entrainment is a useful therapeutic tool.

Relief From Constant Thinking
Our primary objective for wellness is the release of trauma, a return to self-awareness, and the establishment of a renewed relationship with our body. When our body is in a calm, and we’re in a meditative, dreamy, peaceful and relaxed state, it becomes easier to detach from our worries and dark thoughts. This is why mind relaxation techniques help to create some mental space to think and solve problems. But it’s not always easy to get there without some help. Sound therapy can help.
The concept of sound therapy is simple: by listening to specific audio frequencies, we can reset our brains and move into healing states of consciousness while reducing anxiety and pain. Our bodies naturally relax, subjective pain levels decrease, and our blood pressure goes down. When our brain is busy processing the sounds coming into our ears, this affords us some relief from the constant thinking we usually do.
Sound Vibration and Instant Meditation
Better yet, if we combine healing audio plus vibration as from a subwoofer, we can put our entire mindbody into a self-healing trance. For instance, listening to binaural frequencies on headphones while simultaneously humming along, we can enhance the entrancement effect upon ourselves. Often our voice can create resonating frequencies with the sound from our earbuds, whereby our voice adds attention-grabbing interest to the binaural-beat effect.
Taking this one step further with the addition of a wearable haptic device such as the Woojer Strap, we can then add literal vibration into our body which feels a lot like wearing a personal subwoofer. Tissue vibration provides us with cellular relaxation and deepens the effect of that trance-like state you’re after.
In many people’s experience, healing sounds can provide a form of instant meditation (if we allow it to happen). When we combine audible healing frequencies while introducing the addition of vibration into our bodies by humming or by wearing an acoustic vibration device, we can achieve deep meditative, self-healing states with relative ease.
Sound waves to our ears are like thoughts to our soul.
Sound Therapy is an energetic healing activity
Everything from drums, gongs, and singing bowls, to tuning forks, chanting, and humming have been used for sound healing by every civilization on Earth. Sound healing adherents say that listening to percussive instruments like gongs or the harmonics generated by Tibetan singing bowls and tuning forks reduces stress and can place the listener into a meditative state.
The human voice is likely the most healing sound on the planet. Your own voice can be used to help heal yourself. Chanting isn’t something as esoteric as it sounds; it’s just a form of monotone singing. When we sing or otherwise make sustained sound through our vocal cords, whether chanting or humming, all the cells in our upper body feel the vibrations. If we do it right, we can make our entire chest, abdomen, and neck resonate with the healing sound of our voice. This vibration helps to relax the cells in our body.
This is what sound therapy is all about.
Therefore, chanting or humming is a highly energetic healing practice. It forces us to breathe more deeply, providing more oxygen to fuel our cells’ energy generation. The resonance of your voice in your chest, neck, stomach, and shoulders vibrates your very cells, allowing you to calm yourself down all the way to the cellular level and into your bones.
Brainwave Entrainment from Sound Waves
There are many ways to find inner calm. Peace in our heads, less anxiety, stress, and pain. That’s all we want. We’ll do almost anything to find it. Brainwave Entrainment can be enjoyed as a specific form of sound therapy.
Brainwave entrainment is a technique that uses rhythmic sensory stimuli—such as audio (binaural beats), visual (flickering lights), or tactile vibration—to align the brain’s electrical impulses with the stimulus’s frequency. It leverages the “frequency following response” to safely induce specific mental states, including deep relaxation, enhanced focus, meditation, or improved sleep.
Healing audio can bring us inner calm, and it works for almost everyone. However, our positive intent and attitude play a huge role in how well it works. Having a positive attitude is a rule that applies equally well to self-healing from chronic pain as to remission from cancer.
Listening to audio specifically designed for “brainwave entrainment” can result in calmness, focus, flow states, optimal performance, peace of mind, a sense of purpose, and renewed determination. Most people report genuinely reduced pain and anxiety levels.
Plus, it helps us regain a sense of balance and elevate our self-belief by putting us in a state of mind where our dark thoughts can’t be heard or are easily pushed aside. This is what finally allows us to relax or even fall asleep.
Sound Therapy for Guided Meditation
Listening to healing audio is a great way to start our days calm and focused. It’s also an excellent way to help get to sleep at night. Some say meditation takes years of practice before we can consciously reach hypnotic states. Audio entrainment can take you to that same state of mind in just about 10 minutes with relatively little effort. Thus all the same benefits expected from meditation can be had only by listening to some binaural beats designed to encourage your brain into more peaceful patterns.
During deep meditation, people experience a disconnection of self from their thoughts and body somatics; this is also referred to as dissociation* in psychological terms. Interestingly, the word meditation is only one letter different from medication. So, we could think of audio healing therapy as a form of meditation medication, without any life-threatening side-effects.
Audio-visual brain-calming dissociation is rapid, requires only 4 to 10 minutes in most cases and provides an excellent means for clearing the mind of destructive, fearful thoughts and allowing the person to relax and restabilize.
*dissociation is described as a disconnection of self from thoughts and somatic awareness, similar to deep meditation.
Tips & Warnings
Listening to sounds that change your brain state can cause you to fall asleep. Different sound frequencies provide an incredibly wide range of benefits, spanning a wide range of brainwave states. Audio that is designed to alter your brainwaves may lead to an altered state of consciousness, and so it is not recommended that you listen to this type of audio (binaural beats) using headphones while driving.
Experimentation is required to find binaural healing tracks that work for your situation. It probably took me at least two weeks of searching to find healing audio that didn’t annoy me. You’ll need to look around on YouTube to see what works best for your condition or desired mental state.
Some makers of premium binaural audio charge $2 to $15 per track, but beware! There are a lot of charletans out there selling you nothing but massage parlor music and claiming the healing frequencies are “subliminal.”
If you can’t hear the beating frequencies of a binaural track, then it won’t work! Also, it takes a minimum of 10 minutes before brainwave entrainment can start to do its work for you.
Some websites caution that folks with pacemakers or heart problems, pregnant women, and people who suffer from seizures should consult with a physician before listening to audio, which can profoundly change their brain states. However, there seem to be no reports of anyone causing themselves harm by listening to entrainment-type sounds, nor any indications that doing so is detrimental to our mental health.
